Single life in Luxembourg in figures — 2026 study

How many are they? Who are they? Where do they come from? A mapping of single life in the Grand Duchy, based on Statec data and the observations of our Easys network.

Happy couple supported by Easys, matchmaking agency in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, being single is no longer an exception: it has become a majority lifestyle among working-age adults of couple-forming age. This study brings together publicly available data (Statec, Eurostat) and our own observations from over 25 years of matchmaking, to draw a precise portrait of the market.

How many singles in the Grand Duchy?

Luxembourg has 660,000 inhabitants in 2026, of whom 47% are foreign nationals (Statec). Among the adult population (15+), the marital status split is as follows:

  • Single (never married): about 43%
  • Married or civil partnership: about 48%
  • Divorced: about 7%
  • Widowed: about 2%

By adding the divorced and widowed to the "never married" singles, you get almost one in two adults not in a married couple in Luxembourg. The figure climbs above 55% among the 25-45 age group, the most active band on the dating market.

The typical profile of a Luxembourg single

A very international population

The Grand Duchy is the most multicultural country in Europe: Portuguese, French, Italians, Belgians, Germans, British, Romanians, Poles — linguistic diversity shapes everyday life, including dating. Among Easys singles in Luxembourg, we find:

  • Around 30% native-born Luxembourgers
  • 40% cross-border workers from Belgium, France or Germany working in the Grand Duchy
  • 30% expats from other backgrounds (EU and non-EU)

This diversity creates an exceptional richness of possible encounters, but also frictions: languages, cultures, expectations vary with origin.

Executives and qualified professionals

Luxembourg is dominated by financial services, EU institutions, consulting and tech. Our clients reflect this structure:

  • Senior executives: 35%
  • EU civil servants: 25%
  • Professionals and entrepreneurs: 20%
  • Middle managers: 15%
  • Other (medical, arts, etc.): 5%

Age — a market that stretches

The age pyramid of Easys singles in Luxembourg:

  • 25-35: 20% — often recent expats, tired of the apps
  • 35-45: 30% — executives in full career, saturated diaries
  • 45-55: 25% — often post-divorce, second chapter
  • 55-65: 18% — empty-nesters, widows/widowers, long-term expats
  • 65 and over: 7% — proof that love has no age

Why is single life so present in Luxembourg?

Three structural reasons

1. The intensity of work. 50-60 hour weeks are common among executives, EU civil servants and in finance. Organic socialising time shrinks drastically.

2. Expat rotation. Many international profiles only stay 3 to 10 years in Luxembourg. This creates a fluid market, but also relationships that struggle to take root for those seeking lasting bonds.

3. The language barrier. Four official languages (French, German, Luxembourgish, English) plus expat community languages — it is rich, but it fragments social circles.

How do singles in Luxembourg meet?

From our observations and recent European studies on couples, the routes to meeting break down as follows for new couples in Luxembourg:

  • Apps and dating sites: ~40%
  • Professional circles: ~25%
  • Mutual friends and circle: ~20%
  • Hobbies and activities: ~10%
  • Matchmaking agencies and speed dating: ~5%

The matchmaking agencies represent a modest but growing share — particularly among 35+ profiles for whom apps no longer work.

What singles in Luxembourg expect in 2026

The expectations of our members have sharpened over the past five years:

  • Seriousness and commitment: weariness of "ghosting" and relationships with no follow-up pushes singles toward more committing pathways.
  • Confidentiality: in a city where everything gets known, public exposure on the apps becomes a barrier, especially for visible profiles.
  • Time saving: no longer spending 5-10 hours a week filtering profiles, but delegating it to a professional.
  • Deep compatibility: values, life project, vision of the couple — more than surface criteria (height, hobbies).

Conclusion: a fast-evolving market

The Grand Duchy presents a situation unique in Europe: an exceptional concentration of premium single profiles, a linguistic and cultural fragmentation that makes organic encounters rarer, and a growing appetite for bespoke solutions.

That is precisely what justifies the existence of a modern matchmaking agency in Luxembourg: supporting discerning singles on a journey they cannot lead alone in this market configuration.
