Dating after 50: finding love again in Luxembourg

Divorce after twenty years of marriage, losing a partner, children who have left home: at 50 or 60, you no longer look for love the same way. What the Grand Duchy's figures show — and how to meet someone worthwhile without spending your evenings on an app.

Many of the people who come to our office in Gasperich are over 50. Executives who gave thirty years to their careers, parents whose children have just moved out, widows and widowers who never imagined "starting again". At some point, they all ask the same question: is it still possible? The answer is yes — and the figures confirm it.

Can you really find a serious relationship after 50 in Luxembourg?

Yes. Almost one marriage in three celebrated in Luxembourg is a remarriage, and the second half of life has become a common time to start a new relationship.

The figures from STATEC, La démographie luxembourgeoise en chiffres 2025:

  • 751 remarriages in 2024, or 29.3% of the 2,567 marriages celebrated in the Grand Duchy
  • 520 divorced men and 487 divorced women remarried that year
  • 26 widowers and 19 widows also remarried — not counting the many couples who choose a civil partnership (PACS) or simply live together

Time is on your side, too. Luxembourg has one of the highest life expectancies in Europe — 83.5 years in 2024 according to the OECD, almost two years above the EU average. At 50, a new love story can last longer than many first marriages.

How many singles over 50 are there in Luxembourg?

Tens of thousands. The Grand Duchy has around 76,000 divorced, separated or widowed residents — a population that, almost by definition, is often past fifty.

  • 48,431 divorced or separated people on 1 January 2025 — a figure that has risen steadily (11,764 in 1981)
  • 27,528 widows and widowers
  • 103,889 residents aged 65 and over (15.2% of the population) and 234,884 people aged 40 to 64
  • 1,197 divorces granted in 2024, more than one in five after at least twenty years of marriage

That last point matters. "Grey divorce" — separating after 50, often when the children leave home — is rising across the Western world. In the United States, the divorce rate among people aged 50 and over has roughly doubled since 1990, according to the National Center for Family & Marriage Research. In Luxembourg, the share of divorces after twenty years of marriage rose from 18.9% to 21.6% in twenty-four years. As a result, many people find themselves single at an age when their social circle never expected it.

Why is it harder to meet someone after 50?

Because natural opportunities to meet people fade with age — the wish to love does not. Work, friends and leisure often revolve around established couples.

  • A settled social circle: friends have been couples for years, dinners are for four, and turning up alone feels awkward
  • Apps built for thirty-somethings: fast pace, photos first, conversations that fade within three days
  • Privacy and discretion: in Luxembourg everyone knows everyone, and an executive has no wish to see their profile circulate
  • Blended families: adult children, grandchildren, a former spouse, assets — many things to reconcile
  • Loneliness: according to the EU Loneliness Survey by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, 13% of Europeans feel lonely most of the time, and Luxembourg is among the EU countries where this feeling is most widespread

None of these obstacles is insurmountable. But they explain why so many people aged 55 or 60 tell us: "I simply don't know where to meet anyone."

What singles over 50 are looking for

A calm, sincere relationship rather than a conventional format. After 50, you know what you want — and above all what you no longer want.

  • Companionship and real conversation rather than surface-level seduction
  • Aligned values: fidelity, respect, attitudes to family and money
  • Preserved independence: many choose to keep separate homes, at least at first
  • A concrete shared project: travel, culture, retirement, time with grandchildren
  • Emotional maturity: having made peace with one's past before writing a new chapter

Marriage is no longer a must, but it remains a frequent choice — as the 751 remarriages of 2024 show.

Dating apps after 50: what you should know

They work poorly for a serious relationship after 50. Few people in this age group use them for long, and the format favours volume over compatibility.

  • According to the Pew Research Center, 17% of Americans aged 50 and older have ever used a dating site or app — 23% of those in their 50s and 14% of those in their 60s
  • Only 3% have used one in the past year, compared with 15% of under-50s
  • Profiles are rarely verified, which increases exposure to fake profiles and romance scams
  • Discretion is not guaranteed: your photo can be seen by colleagues, neighbours, sometimes your own children

Five tips for a serious relationship after 50

Be clear about what you want, close the previous chapter, and choose a setting that respects your privacy. The rest comes with the encounter itself.

  1. Take stock of your story. An unresolved separation or bereavement shows from the first date. Our article on dating after a separation explains why that time matters.
  2. Define your project. Living together or not, remarrying or not, the place of the children: say it early and plainly.
  3. Widen your physical criteria, not your values. After 50, age and appearance matter far less than a compatible way of life.
  4. Keep first dates simple: lunch, an exhibition, a walk through the Grund. Our first date guide for Luxembourg City suggests places.
  5. Tell your children at the right moment — neither too early nor last. How they react often depends on how they find out.

How a matchmaking agency supports singles over 50

By introducing serious people, already met in person, who share your stage of life. It is often the most direct and discreet way to meet someone after 50.

  • An in-depth first interview, in French or English, to understand your story and your plans
  • Verified profiles: identity, family situation and seriousness checked
  • Targeted introductions based on age, values, children and place of residence — in Luxembourg and the Greater Region
  • Total discretion: no published profiles, no photos in circulation
  • Support after every meeting, and if needed life coaching to prepare for this new chapter

At 50, you no longer have time to waste on someone who isn't right for you. That is exactly what makes love in the second half of life so true.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to find a serious relationship after 50 in Luxembourg?

How many divorced or widowed people live in Luxembourg?

Around 76,000. On 1 January 2025, Luxembourg had 48,431 divorced or separated residents and 27,528 widowed residents, out of 681,973 inhabitants (STATEC).

Are dating apps suitable for people over 50?

Rarely. In the United States, only 17% of adults aged 50 and older have ever used a dating site or app, and 3% have used one in the past year (Pew Research Center, 2023). These tools are designed for a younger audience and a fast pace.

What do singles over 50 look for?

Above all, a stable and serene relationship built on companionship and shared values. Many are not necessarily looking to remarry or move in together straight away: the quality of the relationship matters more than its format.
