New in Luxembourg: building a social circle, then finding love

Moving abroad means leaving friends, family and habits behind. What the figures say in the Grand Duchy, in which order to rebuild your social life, and when love can come into play.

The first months in Luxembourg often look like a paradox: a job, a flat, a transport pass, and still nobody to call on a Saturday night. This is not a personal failure. It is the normal consequence of moving, and it can be fixed with method.

Why do people feel lonely in one of the most international countries in the world?

Because being surrounded by foreigners is not the same as having a circle. Half of residents come from elsewhere, but each arrives with their own linguistic and professional bubbles, which rarely overlap.

  • 320,726 foreign nationals out of 681,973 residents, or 47.0% of the population (STATEC, 1 January 2025)
  • Largest communities: Portuguese (89,671), French (49,185), Italian (25,374) (STATEC)
  • 235,900 cross-border workers work in Luxembourg without living there: they go home every evening, away from neighbourhood life (STATEC, Le Luxembourg en chiffres 2025, 2024)
  • 13% of Europeans feel lonely most or all of the time; 35% at least sometimes; Luxembourg is among the most affected countries (JRC, 2022)

Our guide to dating for expats explains why professional circles close in. This article looks at the step before: how to build that circle.

In which order should you rebuild your social life?

In this order: a base, regular activities, a few friends, and only then dating. Each step makes the next one easier.

  1. A base. Choose a neighbourhood or municipality to live in for at least a year: familiar places (baker, café, park) create familiar faces.
  2. A fixed weekly activity. Team sport, choir, language class, club, volunteering. Regularity matters more than the activity itself: you befriend the people you see again.
  3. Two or three close friends. Suggest the coffee after the activity yourself: in a city where everyone is passing through, nobody dares to make the first move.
  4. Only then, dating, with a circle that supports you and keeps you from depending on one person.

Why does a social circle also protect your love life?

Because a well-supported person chooses better. European data show that loneliness falls noticeably when you share daily life.

  • A happy relationship is associated with 7 percentage points less loneliness than being single (JRC, 2022)
  • Living with another adult: 3 points less than living alone (JRC, 2022)
  • 33% of residents aged 18 and over are single in 2025, against 26% in 2001: you are not alone in this (STATEC)

A newcomer who rushes into a relationship to fill the gap risks choosing out of need rather than desire. A solid circle leaves time to choose.

How do you meet people when you know nobody yet?

Through a channel that depends neither on your network nor on how long you have been here. The options differ in speed, seriousness and discretion.

  • Regular activities: slow but lasting; ideal for friendships
  • Expat events: practical, but heavily geared to professional networking
  • Dating apps: fast, but not discreet in a country of 682,000 residents, and uneven in seriousness
  • A matchmaking agency: one-to-one introductions to established people committed to a serious search

To compare, see speed dating, apps and agencies and discreet dating.

How Easys supports newcomers

By introducing you to people you would not have met alone, without your profile circulating. Our role starts where your network ends.

  • A free private first meeting, in French or English, in the office or by video call
  • No published profile: no photo or name circulates without your consent
  • One-to-one introductions, chosen for shared values and life plans
  • A local eye: we know the circles, neighbourhoods and customs of the country

The detail is in the Method; for international profiles, see dating for expats.

Five habits for the first months

  1. Sign up for a weekly activity within your first two weeks.
  2. Take the initiative for the first coffee: others are waiting too.
  3. Learn a few words of Luxembourgish: the effort is always noticed.
  4. Keep regular contact with loved ones back home, without hiding in it.
  5. Do not force dating: let the circle form, then choose. See our first date guide.

You do not fall in love with a country: you stay because someone is waiting for you there.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make friends when you arrive in Luxembourg?

By multiplying regular occasions rather than one-off evenings: team sport, a club, a language class, volunteering. In a country where 47% of residents are foreign nationals (STATEC), many people are looking for the same thing as you.

How many foreigners live in Luxembourg?

320,726 people out of 681,973 residents on 1 January 2025, or 47.0% of the population (STATEC). The largest communities are Portuguese (89,671), French (49,185) and Italian (25,374).

Why do people feel lonely even in a very international country?

Because social life is split into professional and linguistic bubbles. Across Europe, 13% of people feel lonely most of the time, and Luxembourg is among the most affected countries (European Commission, JRC, 2022).

Should you make friends first or look for love?

Both can move forward together, but a solid social circle makes dating calmer: you no longer depend on one person to feel at home.

Is a matchmaking agency suitable for someone new to the country?

Yes, it is often the most direct route: it introduces you, one by one, to established people looking for a serious relationship, with no published profile. At Easys the first meeting is free, in French or English.
