Marriage and divorce in Luxembourg: the key figures

How many marriages, how many divorces, at what age do people marry, and how long does a marriage last in the Grand Duchy? The latest official figures, and what they say about couple life.

Two joined hands with a ring on one finger: a symbol of marriage and commitment, at the heart of the marriage and divorce figures for Luxembourg

How many couples marry in Luxembourg, at what age, and how many split up? We have gathered the latest official figures from STATEC and Eurostat. They describe a country where people marry late, across cultures, and where a second start has become ordinary.

How many marriages take place in Luxembourg?

2,567 marriages were celebrated in the Grand Duchy in 2024, 1.1% more than in 2023. The crude marriage rate is 3.8 per 1,000 inhabitants (Eurostat).

  • 2,567 marriages in 2024; 2,539 in 2023; 2,475 in 2022; 1,945 in 2021 (STATEC)
  • 70.7% first marriages (1,816) and 29.3% remarriages (751) in 2024 (STATEC)
  • 89 same-sex marriages, or 3.5% of the total: 49 between men and 40 between women (STATEC)
  • 3.8 per 1,000 inhabitants in Luxembourg, versus 4.2 in Germany (2024) and 3.9 on average in the European Union (Eurostat); the EU rate was 8.0 per 1,000 in 1964

Marriage has recovered from the Covid trough, yet across Europe it is still half as frequent as in the mid-1960s. Almost three marriages in ten are already remarriages: in the Grand Duchy, starting over is a common situation, not an exception.

At what age do people marry in Luxembourg?

In 2024, women marry for the first time at 32.4 on average and men at 34.3 (STATEC). Twenty-five years ago it was 27.6 and 30.2.

  • 32.4 years (women) and 34.3 years (men) in Luxembourg in 2024, according to STATEC; the age has risen by about five years since 2000 (27.6 and 30.2)
  • 32.7 and 34.8 years using Eurostat's calculation method for Luxembourg in 2024: always quote the organisation with the figure
  • 32.9 and 35.2 years in Belgium (Eurostat, 2023); 34.3 and 36.4 years in France (Eurostat, 2022, provisional)
  • 31.0 and 33.4 years on average across OECD countries (latest year available)

At 35, being single is therefore not being late: it is the average age at which people first marry. Many of our members join us at exactly this turning point, with an established career and a packed diary.

How many marriages unite two different nationalities?

Nearly two marriages in three involve at least one foreign spouse: only 35.7% unite two Luxembourgers (STATEC, 2024).

  • 917 marriages (35.7%) between two Luxembourgers, versus 39.9% in 2023
  • 796 marriages (31.0%) between a Luxembourger and a foreigner, versus 27.4% in 2023
  • 854 marriages (33.3%) between two foreign spouses

This mirrors a country where 47.0% of the 681,973 residents hold a foreign nationality as of 1 January 2025 (STATEC). We devoted an article to it: intercultural and multilingual love in Luxembourg.

How many divorces a year in Luxembourg?

Courts granted 1,197 divorces in 2024, a rate of 1.77 per 1,000 inhabitants (STATEC). The recent peak was in 2019, with 1,906 divorces.

  • 1,197 divorces in 2024; divorce rate of 1.77‰, versus 3.07‰ in 2019 and 1.60‰ in 1980 (STATEC)
  • 46.6 divorces per 100 marriages in Luxembourg in 2024; 43.0 in Belgium in 2023 (Eurostat data)
  • 1.6 divorces per 1,000 inhabitants in the European Union in 2024, versus 0.8 in 1964 (Eurostat)

The ratio of 46.6 divorces per 100 marriages compares divorces and marriages of the same year: it does not mean half of all couples will split. It does show that separation is part of the Luxembourg marital landscape.

After how many years do couples divorce?

The average length of marriage at the time of divorce is 12.5 years in Luxembourg in 2024 (STATEC).

  • 22.6% of divorces occur before 5 years of marriage
  • 21.6% occur after 20 years of marriage or more (259 divorces)
  • 16.8% of 55-64 year-olds are divorced as of 1 January 2025: our calculation from Eurostat marital-status data

One divorce in five therefore comes after twenty years together. This is the audience for what we call the second start: people aged 45 to 65, often independent and discerning, who now know what they want. Our article on serious dating after 50 is written for them.

What these figures change for meeting someone

Marrying late, across cultures, with a life that is often already full: meeting someone is something to prepare rather than leave to chance. Three practical lessons.

  • No reason to feel behind: the average age at first marriage is over 32, and almost one marriage in three is a remarriage
  • Widen your cultural horizon: two marriages in three involve a foreign spouse
  • Save time: with little free time, a targeted introduction beats weeks of messaging

That is precisely the role of a matchmaking agency: introducing people who are compatible at depth, discreetly, without taking your evenings. To understand the approach, see our Method.

Figures describe a country. They say nothing about the person waiting for you: only a conversation can.
