Meeting someone after losing a spouse in Luxembourg: loving again without betraying what was
Losing a spouse does not switch off the need for companionship. What the figures say in the Grand Duchy, why there is no "right time", and how to move forward without pressure.
Many widowed people tell us, sometimes quietly, at the very start: "I don't know whether I'm allowed". You are. Loving again takes nothing from the person you lost; it is another page, written beside the first.
How many people are widowed in Luxembourg?
27,528 people were widowed in Luxembourg on 1 January 2025, or 4.0% of its 681,973 residents. The share rises sharply with age, but it also touches people who are still working.
- 681,973 residents on 1 January 2025 (STATEC, La démographie luxembourgeoise en chiffres 2025)
- 27,528 widowed people, or 4.0% of the population (based on Eurostat data on legal marital status, 2025)
- 5.0% of adults aged 18 and over (calculated from Eurostat data)
- 656 people aged 18 to 49 are widowed: an early, often sudden bereavement that is rarely discussed (based on Eurostat data)
Calculated from the headcounts published by Eurostat; these are not percentages published as such.
At what age do people become widowed?
Most often after 65, but more than 3,600 residents aged 50 to 64 have already lost a spouse. The widowed share rises from 2.7% at 50-64 to 36.4% at 75-99.
- 2.7% of 50-64 year-olds (3,672 people)
- 10.8% of 65-74 year-olds (6,200 people)
- 36.4% of 75-99 year-olds (16,901 people)
Source: calculated from Eurostat data on 1 January 2025, adding single years of age. In other words, losing a spouse between 50 and 65, when you still feel young, is statistically uncommon, which deepens the sense of facing it alone.
Why does loneliness weigh more after losing a spouse?
Because daily life empties at once, and a social circle built as a couple shrinks. European data show that a happy relationship clearly protects against loneliness.
- 32.2% of adults aged 65 and over in the EU live alone or are single parents (Eurostat, 2025)
- The number of men aged 65 and over living alone rose by 37.0% between 2016 and 2025, against 16.8% for women (Eurostat)
- 13% of Europeans feel lonely most or all of the time; 35% at least sometimes (JRC, European Commission, 2022)
- A happy relationship is associated with 7 percentage points less loneliness than being single (JRC, 2022)
These figures do not say you must hurry. They say that the need for company is universal, and nothing to be ashamed of.
Is there a right time to start again?
No, no deadline applies. The right time is when the wish for company returns, without you having to justify it to anyone.
- A few months or several years: both are normal
- It is not a replacement: you are not looking for someone "instead of"
- Relatives' reactions can be clumsy; your own wish remains the only criterion
- Children and stepchildren: speak to them gently, but without asking permission
Why are dating apps a poor fit?
Because they rely on speed and exposure, both hard to bear after a bereavement. Your photo and family situation are visible to thousands of strangers, in a country of 682,000 residents where everyone crosses paths.
- A swiping pace that sits badly with a grieving heart
- Rarely verified profiles, with a real risk of romance scams, which often target people living alone
- No knowledge of your story: you must explain yourself in every exchange
Our comparison of speed dating, apps and agencies sets out these limits, and our article on discreet dating explains how to protect your privacy.
How Easys supports widowed people
By listening first, introducing second, and never pressing. At Easys, your story is heard before a single profile is suggested.
- A free private first meeting, in a closed office or by video call, in French or English, to talk about what you are living
- No published profile: no photo, name or family situation circulates without your consent
- One-to-one introductions, chosen for shared values and life plans
- Your pace: you can pause, wait, resume
- Equally serious people, verified before any introduction
Our approach is set out in the Method; for related reading, see dating after 50 and meeting someone after a separation.
Five landmarks to move at your own pace
- Listen to your wish, not the calendar. No timeline is "normal".
- Keep a place for memory. Loving again erases nothing.
- Talk to someone you trust before starting, or to a bereavement professional if needed.
- Begin with a conversation, not a commitment. A coffee is enough. See our first date guide.
- Choose a discreet setting that does not expose you.
Loving again does not betray the one who has gone: it honours the capacity to love learned beside them.

Frequently asked questions
How many people are widowed in Luxembourg?
27,528 people on 1 January 2025, or 4.0% of the population (based on Eurostat data on legal marital status). Among adults aged 18 and over that is 5%; among those aged 65 to 74, 10.8%.
Can you start again after losing a spouse?
Yes. Loving again neither replaces nor erases the person who died: it is another story. There is no "normal" timeline; the right moment is when the wish for company returns, without pressure.
How long should you wait before meeting someone?
No delay is imposed. Everyone moves at their own pace: some feel ready after a few months, others after several years. The only reliable criterion is your own wish, not other people's opinion.
Are dating apps suitable after bereavement?
Rarely. They expose your photo and situation to thousands of strangers, at a fast pace ill-suited to grief. A matchmaking agency offers one-to-one introductions, with no published profile.
How does Easys support widowed people?
Through a free, no-obligation private first meeting, then introductions chosen one by one at your pace, with complete confidentiality: no profile is published and no photo is shared without your consent.
